Dining in Pennsyltucky

Think of Pennsyltucky region as the Keystone-shaped heart of Pennsylvania (wider at the northern region and more tapered in the south) and that is why Philly and Pittsburgh aren’t included. This page is a list of vegetarian dining options in the heart of PA that you, as a vegetarian, wish you knew about before you had to settle for less.

I won’t be including large chains where everyone knows what to expect (Denny’s, Eat n Park, Shoney’s, Ruby Tuesdays) nor the places where you assume you can get just a side salad, grilled cheese or slice of cheese pizza. My reviews of ethnic restaurants (which I love) like Chinese or Indian buffets will be secondary since many of their menus are similar nation wide.

I will try to keep this list as updated as possible since ownership, customer demand and economic concerns may change the food options over time. Please share any central Pennsylvania locations you know that have consistent vegetarian options.

BiNaH_Hex_2012_smDo make note of the restaurants sporting the Pennsyltucky Veggie Awards. Restaurants marked with these cute hex sign award logos on the them have some of the finest features in the region and are worth your attention.

Altoona, PA
The Knickerbocker Tavern
(814) 942-0770
3957 W 6th Ave
Altoona, PA 16601

Mostly tavern food but the historic building with outdoor courtyard in fair weather is very nice. Housemade Hummus on the appetizer list and a dense Housemade Veggie Burger are a few of the vegetarian choices. A few other Greek inspired menu items and other appetizers could work out too. Beware the award winning soups, many have chicken stock.

Phoenicia Mediterranean Restaurant
(814) 946-8811
1302 Logan Blvd.
Altoona, PA 16602
A bit pricey but if you are a vegetarian, in Altoona and don’t want to eat at a chain restaurant, Phoenicia has plenty of choices. Website has a 15% off coupon for PSU college students to help with take-out purchases. Ample Mediterranean appetizers, salads, and entrés. Try the Mediterranean Couscous, Safflower Linguini Pesto, or the Vegetarian Combo Platter.

Bloomsburg, PA

Prana Juice Bar and Namaste Cafe
(570) 784-3088
143 E Main St
Bloomsburg, PA 17815
I don’t list every little café or juice bar that has a hummus option, central PA has scads of those. Prana is different with a considerable café menu that is all vegetarian. I can’t wait to try their , Chesapeake Bay “Crabby” Patty, a homemade Chesapeake Bay style tempeh cake on sprouted grain bun! Vegetarian, vegan, gluten free and raw diets will all find something at Prana.

Bellefonte, PA

The Governors’ Pub
(814) 353-1008
211 W. High Street
Bellefonte, PA 16828
Along High Street makes it easy to access for whatever reason brings you to the area. It looks just like The High Street Pub of years ago but don’t be fooled, the vegetarian options are severely limited and you can read my full review here. The “Portabella,” a so-so mushroom cap sandwich and a fine Greek Salad are on the lunch menu. For Dinner, forget the Swabian Onion Soup (made with chicken stock) and I have yet to try the La Belle Fonte Pasta. Neither menu has changed since they opened so you can at least count on those few choices.

The Greek Salad and Vegetable Fajitas are fine but the clientele are frequently a bar crowd. Some soups are very nice and the Portobello Sandwich is noteworthy.Food review to can be seen at this link.

Gaia Fresh Food Café
(717) 386-5323
57 West Pomfret Street
Carlisle, PA 17013
Gaia is more that it’s food menu. It is just as it claims, being a “warm comfortable community space to encourage joy and wellbeing.” The limited but statisfying menu is all vegetarian. Salads and wraps galore but I suggest the Scookie (scone/cookie hybrid) and a hot cup of Spiced Chai and all will be right with your world. Chat with the owner, George, who is amicable and will make you feel like a long lost friend.BiNaH_Hex_2012_sm

A little veggie oasis in a town known for hosting a restaurant with it’s “World’s Largest Hamburger Challenges.” Tucked beside The Angry Bean Coffeehouse, Ethan’s little menu has enough regular vegetarian choices to make it worth stopping by. Simple sandwiches or melty quesadillas will fill the tummy and the friendly staff will warm the heart.

From their list of Vegetarian Delights – I suggest the Mazza Platter; hommous, baba ghannouj, tabbooli, fatoosh mediterranean salad, one falafel ball and one grape leaf. pita bread on the side. We used to love their stand @ Strawberry Square and hunted them down just for a fix.

Don’t be put off when you enter and see what looks like the interior of a dive bar, Boxers is more than meets the eye. Classical music during lunch, Baked Blackbean Burger or Veggie Burgers or Falafels on Pitas are a few of the many vegetarian choices this eclectic restaurant serves. Over a dozen items are marked with a cheerful “V” on the menu to help vegetarians make quick choices. Check out the Boxerita and know you have a best friend in Huntingdon, PA.

Lancaster, PA

Addisu Ethiopian Restaurant
(717) 341-3904 (717) 291-1542
1027 Dillerville Road
Lancaster PA 17603
All served in traditional style with injera, Addisu has about 8 different vegetarian dishes to choose from. Save yourself the difficulty of deciding and get the combo platter that has a little of almost all of them. This restaurant does serve meat (including lamb) but has a separate, clearly marked, section on their menu for the vegetarian entrees. I would suggest asking exactly what is vegan.

Spyro Gyros
(717) 397-3939
241 N. Queen Street
Lancaster, PA 17603
In the comments section, Kurt has shared, “Spyro Gyro is a great place for veg/vegans. They have a Vegetarian Sampler platter. $10.95 and i dare you to try to eat it all. If you tell them you are vegan they are glad to give you a full vegan platter. Yummmm. Nothing is fried, all baked.” Check out their menu, it is high on my must visit list!

Taj Mahal
(717) 295-1434
2080 Bennett Avenue
Lancaster, PA 17601
Also suggested in the comments section by Kurt, Taj Mahal has as vast a vegetarian menu as any Indian restaurant you can imagine. A real bonus is that their menu has marked what all they can easily make vegan! Vegan Pakoras and Vegan Samosos, I can’t wait. Thanks Kurt!

Cherry Alley Café

21 North 3rd Street
Lewisburg, PA 17837-1501
Lunches at Cherry Alley Café are always a vegetarian treat, I check out the soups first on the chalkboard before entering. Vegans can always enjoy the Grilled Tofu Wrap (Marinated and grilled Tofu, Basmati Rice, Green & Red Cabbage, Carrots, Tomato & Lettuce with Sesame Ginger Dressing) or the Tempeh Wrap (Thai Tempeh cake, Basmati Rice, Carrots, Tomato & Lettuce with spicy Mango Sauce). Plenty to choose from!

Hideaway Latte Caffe

The friendly staff and fresh deli-style food are the best part of the Hideaway. The soup and sandwich combo is the way to go. The Garden sandwich is made fresh and if you have any question about a menu item, the staff won’t guess – they will ask until they find out. Cute place but hard to find off the highway, thus the name!

Worth walking off Market Street and through the park to get to, this is an eclectic little coffee shop. It’s a bit drafty in the winter but Zelda’s always has a vegetarian or vegan soup or two to warm you up. Take cash or use their ATM.

If you find yourself in the Clearfield or Philipsburg are you might find yourself struggling to find anything other than an iceburg lettuce salad when looking for vegetarian options dining out. Retro Eatery doesn’t have many vegan choices but you hav to hand it to them for having one massive veggie burger, their Ritchie Valen Burger. It comes on a soft bun with guac, salasa, lettuce and tomato and with a side of fries. Stop in, play some pinball and a few tunes on the jukebox and thank them for being veggie friendly.

New since March 2012, Fiddlehead hit the ground running and has been offering up a fresh and consistent menu since day one. Dedicated to local ingredients (No Sysco-type supplied food here!) they make multiple soups that are fresh every day. They guarantee at least one vegetarian soup (many times it is vegan)
and the Own It option to the fresh made salads allows you to customize exactly what veggies and tofu you get. All dressings are clearly labled as to which are vegan. Indian Pavilion
(814) 237-3400
222 East Calder Way
State College, PA 16801-4729
As Indian food goes, the lunch buffet caters to the central Pennsylvania palette. It is very mildly spiced, a bit over-processed and very little fresh food to be had. What is great is that it is clear what it and isn’t vegetarian, the flavors are varied, ingredients seasonal, and temperatures just right. There is a clear section on the evening menu for vegetarian dishes and I would encourage maybe even vegans to go since they are so open to modifying their recipes to suit, the manager was who made mention of vegan modifications. Do note they serve meat products and many lamb dishes on the menu. Full review here.

Olde world cuisine and fat deli sandwiches don’t usually mean vegetarian options. Olde New York is a happy exception. Grilled Portobello, Black Bean Burger and “The Broker” sandwiches, a huge Greek salad and many appetizers the size of entrée can fill any lacto-ovo vegetarian’s belly. German styled potato salad has been improved over the past few years since they stopped putting bacon in it, the only thing vegetarians might have missed. A nice place for the whole family! 1. What a great list! I’m from Clearfield, so I’ve eaten at Ethan’s Cafe several times. It’s such a cute little spot – and you’re right – there are plenty of veggie options. I don’t know if it’s still around, but I also really liked Cozy Thai Bistro on College Ave in State College. Great veggie curry!

  2. Addisu has lots for vegetarians but almost nothing, or nothing for vegans. They use ample amounts of butter and will tell you this if you ask.

HOWEVER, the Indian place in lancaster not only has lots of vegan options, they are labeled clearly on the menu. Taj Mahal 2080 Bennett Ave

Also Spyro Gyro is a great place for veg/vegans. They have a vegetarian Sampler platter. $10.95 and i dare you to try to eat it all. If you tell them you are vegan they are glad to give you a full vegan platter. Yummmm. Nothing is fried, all baked.

  3. Hey you should check out Chen’s Mongolian Grill out on South Atherton Street before you get to Boalsburg (It’s right next to the brand new Sheetz). It’s buffet style and you go through and load up your plate with whatever you want (veggies, meat, etc) and then choose your sauce and then they grill it up. It’s a lot like Green Bowl, but I think it’s better!

Thanks for reminding me about Elk Creek Cafe, I love that place and all the great jazz musicians they bring in!

  5. We dined at “Olde New York” last evening and found the black bean burger & grilled portobella mushroom sandwich (shared both) to exceed our expectations. We were customers there prior to our “veganization” in November 2011. This was our first visit since joining the “other side”. We cannot wait to go back. We always loved the atmosphere, service and food quality, now to have healthy choices makes it a home run. Our typical State College haunts are Chen’s, My Thai, Cozy Thai and Green Bowl. Olde New York lends variety to the mix. Next stops: Fiddlehead, Aardvard Kafe & The Greek.

We just moved to state college and are excited to see decent veg-friendly restaurants! We recently ate at The Deli, based on a recommendation from someone who didn’t know we are vegetarian. While there are a few solid vegetarian options on their menu, we were more so surprised and impressed with how accommodating they were when we asked if they could make the Reubens vegetarian. I substituted a veggie burger in place of pastrami, and my husband had a portabella mushroom on the Deli Meshunga sandwich – both were delicious!
